Can I loose fat under my chin? – Double chin removal

One of the biggest questions we get asked is how do I get rid of my double chin and ” What is double chin removal?  The term ‘double chin’ was widely linked to just being overweight; however, there are many other causes, as we will cover below. We all crave for more naturally contoured cheeks and jawline without looking ‘overdone.’ The industry has advanced to the point that there are non-surgical options that deliver significant non-surgical facelifts with zero downtime.

What Are The Causes Of A Double Chin?

A double chin can be caused by an increase in fat and loose skin located on the neck, jawline and chin. This gives the appearance of two or even three chins. Not only does fat play a role in why we can get double chins, but the general process of ageing can be another reason. As we age, the fat pads move down the face with gravity. The skin is like the bra of the face, holding all the fat pads up. As we age, we lose collagen & elastin in the skin, which is less able to hold the fat pads in place. This causes the look of excess skin and saggy skin! These fat pads slide down the face as we age, creating less-defined cheekbones and eventually falling into the jawline and chin area due to gravity.

Loss of collagen and elastin also causes lax skin. We start to lose collagen and elastin from the age of 25. Therefore, to prevent the risk of ‘double chins’, we would start maintenance treatments early rather than later. Prevention is better than a cure! We lose approximately 1-2% of collagen each year starting from age 25. This is why we also recommend our skin supplements to complement clinical skin-tightening and fat-destroying treatments. Collagen loss accelerates during menopause; at menopause, women lose an additional 33% of collagen and elastin.

Why do I have a double chin when I’m skinny?

We meet many slim and young clients who are distressed and confused about why they have a double chin. Many have even considered going under the knife for a facelift! Genetics definitely play a role in the cause of your ‘double chin’, as fat may naturally be distributed in the chin and neck area. Many contributing factors can all create an undefined jawline and chin.

More recently, studies have shown that our posture also has a massive impact on our “turkey neck.” Post-COVID, many of us are spending even more time hunched over our laptops in poor postural positions at home. Research has shown that young teenagers/adults now have early onset signs of spinal curvature. This is due to poor posture, spending endless hours looking down at their mobiles. Spending endless hours looking down at laptops and mobiles is bound to create a more pronounced double chin. This can then be made more obvious with any excess weight. This poor posture & increased hours spent on Zoom looking at ourselves have caused clients to take action. We all want to “look snatched”, which is created by contouring cheekbones and sculpting jawlines.

How long does it take for double chin removal?

We perform non-surgical facelifts without the need for double chin removal surgery. We offer two treatment options: Morpheus8 (radio-frequency microneedling), which Judy Murray, Kim Kardashian, and Amanda Holden use. As well as the latest medical pain-free HIFU technology.  It visibly tightens lax skin by stimulating the production of more collagen and elastin whilst destroying fat cells. Once the fat cells are destroyed, they are gone for good.

Both Morpheus8 & HIFU are very popular because they tighten the skin while permanently breaking down fat cells. Clients are left with less loose skin, contoured cheekbones, smaller pores, fewer fine lines & wrinkles. We always recommend clients start with an Observ skin analysis & consultation to discuss which treatment would be most suitable. The main differences are personal preferences, downtime and comfort levels. They both work at around 4-5mm in depth, targeting the SMAS layer to shrink-wrap the face, destroy fat under the chin, whilst tightening the skin. 

It is important to note that we only use the fat removal setting in and around the jowls and chin. Different settings are used on the rest of the face to tighten the upper layers of skin. Alongside tightening skin and destroying fat cells, these treatment also significantly reduces fine lines, open pores, and lift hooded eyes.

HIFU

Our HIFU is pain-free, unlike traditional older versions of HIFU. There is also zero downtime and no needles or scalpels required! A course of 3 treatments is required, spaced approximately 4 weeks apart. Top-ups may only be required every 12- 18 months, depending on the client’s needs. This treatment is suitable for all skin tones.

With Morpheus8, the downtime is variable depending on the settings used. Some clients have minimal downtime, whereas others may experience up to 5-7 days of downtime. Gold-plated ultra-fine needles are used to create tiny holes in the skin, and numbing cream is applied for comfort. We recommend a course of 3 treatments, approximately 6 weeks apart, for optimum results. Maintenance treatments should be topped up every 12-24 months, depending on age and concern. We can treat all skin tones also.
