Pigmentation

Uneven skin tone, dark patches, or areas of discolouration can affect how we feel about our skin. Pigmentation concerns can develop for many reasons, from sun exposure and hormonal changes to genetics and skin injuries. While some pigmentation fades over time, others can become stubborn, requiring targeted treatments to restore an even, radiant complexion.

At Fiji Skin Clinic, we specialise in advanced treatments designed to reduce pigmentation, brighten skin, and restore balance. Whether you’re dealing with sunspots, melasma, or post-inflammatory marks, we have tailored solutions to help. We safely & effectively treat all types of pigmentation on all skin tones from Fitzpatrick 1-6.  Over 65% of our client base are of deeper skin tones from Fitzpatrick 3-5. This means that we are very experienced at lifting, educating and managing pigmentation safely using specialist medical lasers and skincare.

What Is Pigmentation?

Pigmentation refers to skin colour, which is determined by melanin—a natural pigment produced by skin cells called melanocytes. When melanin production becomes uneven, it can lead to dark spots, patches, or loss of pigment.

There are different types of pigmentation, each with unique causes and treatment approaches:

Hyperpigmentation (Dark Spots & Patches)

  • Hyperpigmentation occurs when excess melanin is produced, leading to darker areas on the skin. This can appear as:
  • Sunspots / Age Spots – Caused by prolonged UV exposure, these small, dark patches commonly appear on the face, hands, and shoulders.
  • Melasma – Larger, hormonal-induced patches that often appear on the forehead, cheeks, or upper lip, triggered by pregnancy, birth control, or hormonal changes.
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) – Dark marks left behind after acne, cuts, burns, or skin irritation.

Hypopigmentation (Loss of Pigment)

  • Hypopigmentation occurs when melanin production decreases, leading to lighter patches of skin. Common forms include:
  • Vitiligo – An autoimmune condition where the skin loses melanin in irregular white patches.
  • Post-Inflammatory Hypopigmentation – Light spots that form after skin injuries, burns, or inflammation, often seen after acne or eczema.

Deep Dermal Pigmentation

Some conditions, such as melasma or stubborn sun damage, sit deeper in the skin, making it harder to treat with surface-level skincare alone. For best results, these types require advanced laser or microneedling treatments.

How Can You Treat Pigmentation?

Pigmentation treatments must be tailored to your skin type, the type of pigmentation, and its depth. At Fiji Skin Clinic, we offer a range of expert solutions to help fade discolouration and restore an even skin tone:

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) – Ideal for sunspots, freckles, and redness, IPL breaks down pigmentation while stimulating collagen for clearer skin.

ClearLift Laser – A gentle, no-downtime laser that targets deep pigmentation and stimulates new skin renewal, great for melasma and age spots.

iPixel Laser – A fractional laser treatment that resurfaces the skin, effectively treating sun damage, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and deep discolouration.

Radio Frequency Microneedling – Combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy to break up deep pigmentation and improve skin texture, perfect for stubborn hyperpigmentation and scarring.

Ice Needling with Exosomes – A cutting-edge microneedling treatment infused with exosomes to brighten and repair skin, particularly effective for melasma and post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Chemical Peels – Targeted peels exfoliate the skin to fade dark spots, even tone, and stimulate new skin growth. Ideal for hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and melasma.

Obagi & Environ Skincare – Medical-grade skincare designed to correct pigmentation, brighten dull skin and protect against future discolouration.

Each treatment is customised to your skin type and concerns to ensure the best results.
